Mahima Chaudhry Says Earlier Filmmaker Wanted 'Virgin Actresses, Who Had Not Kissed'

New Delhi: Bollywood actress Mahima Chaudhry made her acting debut with the 1997 film ‘Pardes’ featuring opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Before venturing into movies, the actress featured in several commercials and a few modelling assignments.

Mahima has delivered some powerful performances in her career with movies like ‘Dhadkan’, ‘Daag’, ‘Lajja’ and others. After spending decades in the industry, Mahima Chaudhry has finally said certain things about the industry out loud in one of her interviews with Hindustan Times.

Mahima did not shy away from speaking her mind and saying that the film industry was ‘far more male dominant’ than it is now. She further said that actresses of today’s generation are also ‘calling the shots’. The ‘Lajja’ actress was quoted saying by the publication, “I think the industry is getting to a position where female actors are also calling the shots. They getter better parts, better pay, endorsements, they’re at a great and much powerful position. They have a longer shelf life than before.”

The ‘Pardes’ actress further revealed during her interaction that during the earlier days in the industry, the relationship status of an actress also impacted her career. Mahima told Hindustan Times, “The minute you started dating someone, people would write you off because they only wanted a virgin who had not kissed. If you were dating someone, it was like, ‘Oh! She’s dating!’. If you were married, then forget it, you career was over, and if you had a child, it was like absolutely over.”

Speaking about the then leading actors of the Hindi film industry, Mahima recalls that the relationship status of a hero did not influence his career. She continued, “Even when Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak came, we didn’t know he was married, same for Govinda. People didn’t show their children’s photographs or expose them as that would tell their age! All these things have really changed between now.”

Mahima Chaudhry also shed light on the fact that now-a-days, the audiences are accepting women in different kinds of roles and their relationship status is least bothering their professional life.
