Why Bollywood stars are posting breastfeeding pictures on Instagram

Neha Dhupia is just one of a host of Bollywood actresses who have been causing a stir recently by posting revealing photographs on the internet.

They’ve been mocked and trolled and told to cover up, but they’re willing to turn a deaf ear to the criticism because there’s a higher reason for what they’re doing.

Dhupia, along with fellow actors and models including Kareena Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan and Gul Panag, belongs to a new breed of celebrity Indian mother that is aiming to change the way their country thinks about breastfeeding. That’s because in the world’s second-most populous country, where a record 49 babies are born every minute, breastfeeding in public still has a stigma attached to it.

As part of her Freedom to Feed campaign, Dhupia – who gave birth to her second baby, a boy, in October – has been posting pictures on Instagram of herself breastfeeding her newborn while sporting a maternity outfit.

The campaign is aimed at making new mothers feel more at ease about feeding their babies in public, in a land where doing so often invites judgment.

In one post, the 41-year-old talks of her experience of being criticised for breastfeeding even though “… the last thing new mothers need is to be questioned, mocked and worst of all trolled. What we need is more freedom to feed. We should be able to feed our baby anywhere, at any given point of time.”

]

Other famous names who have taken up the cause include actress Amrita Rao’s husband, radio jockey Anmol, who shared a picture of his wife breastfeeding their son recently. Model and actress Lisa Haydon, too, has uploaded pictures of herself breastfeeding, calling it “a beautiful way to bond and connect with your child”.

In some societies, such images might barely raise an eyebrow. Yet in India a woman nursing her child in the open will often find herself on the receiving end of nasty comments from passers-by or worse, sexual remarks from men.

The absence of public nursing rooms in a country where women make up 48 per cent of the 1.4 billion population only amplifies their challenges.

“My infant son needed to be fed. I began to nurse him in the park and received several glares from older women. Exclamations of ‘Are you crazy?!’ and ‘Cover up quick!’ greeted me,” said Kanpur-based model Shanti Singh, who gave birth to twins three months ago.

“I think I’ve seen more ‘cleavage’ displayed on fashion ramps and in Bollywood movies than from a mother feeding her child.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CMtqUXODOAH/

Helped along by the actions of Dhupia and co., many in the highly conservative country are beginning to question why such a natural practice should invite social opprobrium or shame.

“While many women are forced to cover up with a sari or dupatta during breastfeeding, some mothers do not as they’re afraid of inconveniencing or suffocating their babies. How would it feel to eat your meals under a blanket?” Singh asked.

Women’s rights activist Ranjana Kumari, director of the Centre for Social Research in New Delhi, said an entrenched bias against public breastfeeding highlighted the pervasiveness of patriarchal expectations and false middle class morality.

“India is a country where a man peeing in public is seen as normal and acceptable. But, the moment a woman breastfeeds her hungry baby in public, all hell breaks loose! Women deserve the right to be in control of what they do with their bodies and we need to respect their choices,” Kumari said.

The activist added that the oversexualisation of female breasts coupled with the push by the powerful formula milk lobby to increase sales meant women’s bodies were “beginning to seem less and less functional and more and more like objects of desire”.

]

This is despite the fact that the World Health Organisation considers breastfeeding one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. Breastfed children perform better on intelligence tests, are less likely to be overweight or obese and less prone to diabetes later in life, according to the WHO. Also, women who breastfeed have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers while the initiation of breastfeeding within one hour has been found to reduce neonatal mortality by 22.3 per cent.

“Early skin-to-skin contact with a mother is instrumental in establishing a mother-child bond while reducing the infant’s crying. It also prevents hypothermia in neonates as they receive warmth from their mother’s proximity. It also reduces the mother’s risk of post-partum haemorrhage which is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality,” said neonatologist Dr Shikha Malhotra of Fortis Hospital, New Delhi.

Despite the importance of breastfeeding, health activists found that around 70 per cent of Indian mothers find breastfeeding a challenge. Only about 44 per cent of babies – or 12 million out of 26 million – begin breastfeeding within one hour of their birth, according to national data sources collected by the Ministry of Women and Child Development between 2013 and 2014. Most infants are fed formula, either powdered or liquid, or animal milk.

The National Family Health Survey 2019-20, conducted for 22 states and Union Territories, also revealed a significant decline in the number of children under three years of age who were breastfed within one hour of birth.

In certain demographics, such as urban and educated mothers, the duration of breastfeeding was also getting shorter, Malhotra said. This was due to early challenges such as sore and cracked nipples, latching issues, exhaustion from waking up in the middle of the night and long feeding sessions which caused many mothers to give-up breastfeeding their babies, she said.

301121_Icelebbrf_SCMP.jpg

However, with greater awareness and education, many millennial mothers have embraced breastfeeding. New Delhi-based PR manager Harpreet Kaur Bakshi, 33, was so determined to feed her son that even though she was working full time, “I made sure I was pumping and leaving bottles at home for him. Every opportunity I got I was feeding him and I didn’t care what others thought or if they were judging me.”

Bakshi said women were realising the health benefits of breastmilk over formula and this was why there was “such an animated debate over why women shouldn’t be judged if they choose to feed their child publicly”.

The government has also stepped in with several initiatives. The National Breastfeeding Promotion Programme aims to teach young mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding while also training hospital midwives and nurses to guide and encourage them. Fittingly, its brand ambassador is Madhuri Dixit, the Bollywood actress.

Malvika Raaj made her big Bollywood debut in Squad opposite Rinzing Denzongpa. It may have got mixed reviews, but the pretty actress is hopeful about her future in the film industry.

Not many know that Malvika played the young Kareena 'Poo' Kapoor in Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

Despite a successful start to her career as a child actor, Malvika took a break to continue with her studies.

She tells Rediff.com Contributor PS Aaryan Khanna, "I was looking for the right opportunity. The start has to be great. I'm glad Squad came along."

How did Squad come to you?

It was offered to me. I was looking to work in the action arena.

The idea was very intriguing and things fell in place.

It was something that would get the best out of me. That was it.

The gut feeling said yes and I went with it.

You played Kareena Kapoor's younger character in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001. You are returning as a lead actress. What have you been doing all these years?

I have learned acting.

I completed my studies.

I did a few ads and then I was looking for the right opportunity. The start has to be great.

I'm glad that Squad came along.

How was Shah Rukh Khan as a co-star? Any striking memories from the K3G says?

He is the most vibrant, witty and caring human.

He is bigger in person.

Did you keep in touch with him?

No. It's been quite some time since we met.

He has been a person whose actions have inspired me, not just his words.

max-width:670px;

Were you in touch with Karan Johar?

Not really, but we meet at parties. He has been a huge influence.

What was he like as a director during K3G?

He was very empathetic and extremely sweet.

He taught me how to go about things and always gave me confidence. There are so many memories (of shooting the film).

While shooting in the busy bylanes, we would eat street food all the time. It was like shots between eating sessions (laughs).

You made your debut opposite Rinzing Denzongpa. Did you learn any tricks about action from him?

A lot, actually. We would discuss how to go about things and there was so much creative germination on set.

We would look at some famous action heroes and heroines and learn about body language.

You caught COVID-19 during the shoot of the film, right?

I caught COVID-19 before we left for our second schedule. I was home for like 20 days.

I got quarantined and they were in touch with me via the net.

They kept the mood high and it was a team that really worked together.

In hindsight, it was something that got me closer to the team of Squad.

max-width:670px;

IMAGE: Malvika Raaj in Squad. Photograph: Kind courtesy Malvika Raaj/Instagram

What sort of precautions did you continue taking during the shoot after you recovered from COVID-19?

The sanitising was always happening.

We would take off the mask only when we gave the shot.

Also, we tried our best to keep up the social distancing.

We did yoga to boost immunity.

max-width:670px;

Photograph: Kind courtesy Malvika Raaj/Instagram

Were you upset that your debut film wasn't theatrical and released on OTT?

Not really. In OTT, the world is the audience.

We have some of the biggest stars on the OTT.

It's destiny and every movie has its own destiny.

Weren't you going to make your Bollywood debut with Emraan Hashmi's Captain Nawab?

We prepared for that film. We left nothing to chance but it got shelved.

Tanishaa is one of the many celebs who resumed work amid the pandemic. While shooting for a film in Lucknow earlier this year, she told BT, “It’s a bad situation for the film industry. There is definitely a risk taken every time you go on set. But you can calculate that risk to a certain amount and you can protect yourself in your environment. You have to think of so much more. Earlier we were so casual about our coffee, our water bottle, where we sit on set but now one has to be so careful.”

When I get in front of the camera, I am my character. Most actors are like that. We are creative people, so in front of the camera, you are disconnecting from reality and in that imaginary world that the cinema creates for you. I am not Tanishaa then, I am the character.”

Kangana Ranaut in trouble again; FIR against actress for Instagram post ‘spreading hatred against Sikhs’ : Bollywood News - Bollywood Hungama

Kangana Ranaut never escapes legal trouble or trouble in general. A new FIR has been filed against the troublemaker actress Kangana Ranaut at Khar police station Mumbai regarding her Instagram Story over spreading ‘hate speech’ for Sikhs in her story.

Kangana-Ranaut-in-trouble-again-FIR-against-actress-for-Instagram-post-%E2%80%98spreading-hatred-against-Sikhs%E2%80%99-1.jpg

A delegation of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee led by its President Manjinder Singh Sirsa met senior police officials in Mumbai on Monday. The delegation briefed officials that time and again Kangana is involved in hurting Sikh sentiments and that legal action should be initiated against her.

An FIR directly under section 295A has been registered against the Manikarnika actress for her spreading hate on social media.

Kangana Ranaut, has a following of 7.9M people on Instagram where she posted ‘khalistani terrorists may be arm twisting the government today but let's not forget one woman, the only woman prime minister ne inn ko apni jhutti ke niche crush kiya the…’. She was referring to Indira Gandhi who launched the operation Blue Star at Golden Temple Amritsar in the year 1984’

This post offended Sikhs in millions and later she had to face repercussions of the hate speech she had spread. Akali Dal leader and spokesperson, Sirsa said that Kangana doesn’t deserve Padma Shri and this honour should be taken back from her by the President of India. He added that the actress should either be in jail or a mental hospital for making such statements against the Sikh community.

The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), too, filed several police complaints against Ranaut on Saturday for allegedly making seditious and derogatory remarks. IYC national secretary Amreesh Ranjan Pandey and Ambuj Dixit, co-coordinator of the outfit’s legal cell, filed a complaint against the infamous actress at the Parliament Street Police Station in New Delhi.

Kangana’s remarks and statements often offend the citizens of India. A couple of days ago, the actress had drawn criticism towards herself after she commented on India’s Independence. She said that India got its real Independence in 2014 and what we got in 1947 was ‘Bheek’. Due to this behavior, she is largely Despised on social media. In fact, due to her rude remarks, Twitter recently banned her from their platform to prevent its users from Kangana’s hate dialogues.

From Nushrratt Bharuccha to Kareena Kapoor Khan: Actresses who have played pregnant women on-screen!

%7B © Provided by BollywoodLife.com

Bollywood actresses are undoubtedly winning the box office game today with their experimental characters and earning massive love and applause with their performances. From shouldering the responsibility of an entire film on their own to essaying bold characters, Bollywood actresses have paved the way. Many actresses even have played the role of a mother and have flaunted a baby bump on screen. Here's the list of actresses who have done so:

Nushrratt Bharuccha in Chhorii

Actress Nushrratt Bharuccha is all set to play the role of a pregnant woman in her horror drama, 'Chhorii' based out of a rural town. For her part, the actress started wearing the 'pregnant' bodysuit almost 25 days prior to the shoot. She had said, "As I'm not actually going to become pregnant for now in reality, I had them make that bodysuit for me to feel what a woman bearing child actually goes through. I was wearing it 20-25 days before the film's shoot started, and literally did all of my chores including eating, sleeping, going to the bathroom, roaming around and everything else to understand the restrictions that it comes with." 'Chhorii' is all set to present Nushrratt shouldering the film for the first time on her own, where she will be carrying the entire narrative of the film single-handedly.

In the dramedy, 'Good Newzz', Kareena plays the role of a pregnant woman on-screen. Kareena's character in the film is eager to have a baby and hence her pregnant role.

Kriti Sanon's career-best performance, 'Mimi' showed her as a pregnant woman on-screen. The actress played the role of a surrogate mother, for which she gained weight to essay her character convincingly and put on around 15 kilos for her role in 'Mimi'. Touted as a game-changer for the actress, 'Mimi' also showed Kriti single-handedly carrying the film and acing at it.

Vidya Balan played a pregnant lady all through the filming of 'Kahaani' and she even promoted the film while donning a prosthetic baby bump. While shooting for Shakuntala Devi biopic, the actress sported a baby bump. She essays the role of the math genius in the film, while Sanya Malhotra plays the role of her on-screen daughter.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan slams nepotism charge in ‘Antim: The Final Truth’ casting

SHOT-17-1302-copy-1637747494843_17d515b8fc6_medium.jpgImage Credit:

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is acutely aware that working with his brother-in-law Aayush Sharma in his production ‘Antim: The Final Truth’ will reek of nepotism and unfair advantage. But the A-lister, with immense clout in the film industry, discredits those accusations by claiming that he wasn’t keen to hire him either.

“I was not the one to even recommend him. In fact, I was against that decision … But he surprised us all,” said Khan in an audio Zoom call with Gulf News.

In director Mahesh Manjrekar’s action thriller ‘Antim: The Final Truth’, releasing in the UAE on November 25, Khan plays an upright Sikh cop who is on a mission to flush out unscrupulous gangster Rahuliya, played by a baby-faced Sharma.

AS1-1637747486923_17d515b710e_original-ratio.jpg Aayush Sharma in 'Antim: The Final Truth' starring Salman Khan Image Credit: Supplied

The unusual casting choice, in which Sharma is on call to look menacing and vitriolic, has understandably polarised Bollywood movie fans who cynically wonder out aloud if the one-film-old Sharma has earned enough street credit to play such a demanding role. But Khan, 55, lets us in on a secret.

“Initially, it was only about me doing my cop character and there was another actor doing this other character. Ayush didn’t look like Rahuliya three months before starting this film, but I saw his growth in the last one and a half months and his dedication was stupendous … Trust me, he was not taken in this film because he is my brother-in-law, but because he is an actor who showed us that he suited that part,” said the veteran actor.

Khan is also the producer of this film, but he says that it was director Manjrekar who convinced him to take Sharma on board.

“The director believed that he could extract what he wanted from Ayush … Honestly, my brother-in-law doesn’t look or behave like Rahuliya. He’s a soft-spoken, humble boy. But when I saw him playing this character, we knew we had made the right choice. And, we didn’t face any date problems with him,” said Khan with a laugh.

Khan also points out that he’s under no compulsion to cast his brothers , his relatives, or his friends in his own productions.

“I see them at home, I don’t need them on screen too,” pointed out Khan in his trademark sarcastic manner.

SHOT-25-1702-copy-1637747497504_17d515b9a2c_original-ratio.jpg Salman Khan Image Credit: Supplied

While Sharma’s inclusion in the film has raised many an eyebrow, Khan doesn’t face any such snubs. The ‘Dabangg’ actor, who was loved for his role as a cheeky and irreverent cop Chulbul Pandey in the hit film franchise, is right up his street in ‘Antim’. The bankable actor and blockbuster magnet is known for playing lion-hearted and virtuous roles. His army of fans are always overjoyed when he plays an indestructible force of nature.

“But this character is totally different from Chulbul Pandey and any other character that I have played so far in my career. I played a Sikh cop long time ago in ‘Heroes’ and it was just a cameo … My character in ‘Antim’ is noble. He has scruples, ethics, and morals,” said Khan.

The turban-wearing cop isn’t impulsive and is calm even when he gets humiliated and focuses on doing the right thing in life. “He’s the kind of guy who fights all odds and cleans up the mess,” said Khan.

SK1-1637747506355_17d515bbcf5_original-ratio.jpg Salman Khan in 'Antim: The Final Truth' Image Credit: Supplied

While his personal life may be checkered with his several brush-ins with the law , his one-screen persona in mostly family entertainers with songs, dance, action, and drama does not reflect any grim shades.

His career-defining roles — be it playing a committed lover in ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ or a golden-hearted nationalist in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ — are invariably unblemished, cheerful, and wholesome.

1_16a08111c40.1605544_1574726908_16a08111c40_original-ratio.jpg A still from 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan'

But of late, his sheen and star power seems to have slightly worn off. His last release in May this year, ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’, didn’t curry any flavour with critics, but managed a respectable earning when it released directly on web streaming platforms in India and in cinemas in the UAE. According to Forbes, the combined collection of ‘Radhe’, both from box office earnings from cinemas as well as pay-per-view model, was pegged at more than Rs2 billion. The hybrid release model was taken out in duress due to the multiple lockdowns triggered by the global COVID-19 pandemic, says Khan.

“If I didn’t take that step, we knew there will be no jobs or no salaries. It was so difficult for people to survive during that … It was lockdown after lockdown. So I thought why not with Rs250 your whole family could sit together and watch a film for almost free ... But it didn’t have the same impact at all like you see it in the big screen,” observed Khan. But he doesn’t blame anyone for that misstep and misadventure.

Lead_-Radhe_17742fd65e4_original-ratio.jpg A still from 'Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai' Image Credit: Supplied

“When I saw ‘Radhe …’ myself on a large television screen, I didn’t get that same impact because that film at its core had some amazing action sequences. They just didn’t look like the way we imagined,” said Khan. Piracy also didn’t help at that point, according to the actor.

With ‘Antim’, Khan and his team have made a conscious decision to release it solely in the cinemas worldwide. But it wasn’t just Khan who battled a lot of uncertainty. During the making of ‘Antim’, director Manjrekar was diagnosed with urinary bladder cancer.

Mahesh-Manjrekar-_17b72392e19_original-ratio.jpg Mahesh Manjrekar, director of 'Antim: The Final Truth'

“He never showed any fear. He completed the whole film’s shooting and after that went in for his surgery. He’s so strong and he was like a rock … so brave. He’s a true hero,” said Khan.

Manjrekar has emerged cancer-free now. And, now the whole focus is on rolling out their labour of love.

‘Antim: The Final Truth’ is culled from Pravin Tarde’s Marati film ‘Mulshi Pattern’ (2018). But Khan claims the plot may be similar, but the characters and the story have been dramatically altered. Even the scale is different, points out the actor.

“That was made on a small budget, but this film is made on a big budget in terms of actions, songs, proper climax, sets and everything,” said Khan.

SK4-1637747516040_17d515be2b3_original-ratio.jpg Salman Khan plays a fierce cop in 'Antim: The Final Truth'

But it isn’t the budget or the scale that’s rocking his boat right now. Khan is undertandably ecstatic that Bollywood cinema is limping back to normalcy. Due to the closure of cinemas in India for nearly two years, the entertainment industry has naturally taken a heavy beating. In the last two months after the cinemas in Maharashtra — a key market for Bollywood — re-opened, big budget films such as Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sooryavanshi’ and Rani Mukerji’s ‘Bunty Aur Babli 2’ have dipped their toes into the pool of theatrical releases. But none of it has been easy as Khan describes that challenging phase as an inordinately tough time.

“It has been difficult for everyone, no matter what position they are in. Very few people made money and those did made a lot of money … But apart from that, it has just been really bad,” said Khan.

Apparently, during a late-night drive he spotted a dark cinema hall in his city and that vision gutted him.

“I felt so bad because all the lights were off and it made me realise that movies in theatres is the only real entertainment we have in our country … Going to a theatre and watching a movie will always remain the best form of entertainment ... So here we are with ‘Antim’”
