Porn, suicide and sex abuse have seeped into the multi-billion dollar business.
Last week, Indian porn star Nandita Dutta was arrested for allegedly luring young women into making sex videos using Bollywood fame as the carrot.
According to the UK Sun, just like Hollywood in the 1930’s, millions of Indians try to make it in Bollywood every year.
The payoff can be staggering.
In 2019, the top earner was Akshay Kumar who earned an imperial $50.5 million Canadian.
But there is a dark underbelly that is driven by desperation, a fickle industry and artistic ego.
“Rejection, failure and abuse don’t happen to us civilians on a daily basis,” Dr. Sweta Shah told Gulf News.
“We aren’t judged by one or two failures in our lives and constantly reminded of it. But the same yardstick isn’t applied to public figures.”

Young women looking for fame in Bollywood are particularly vulnerable. Rape and abuse are part of the climb up the ladder of success and the casting couch is as notorious in Bollywood as it is in Tinseltown.
Many are pressured into sex to win a role on TV or in the movies. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta became one of the first public figures to go public with an account of sexual abuse. Dutta revealed that she was abused over a seven-year period.
In May 2020, nine high-profile Bollywood players were accused of the gang rape and molestation of a model in Mumbai.
Indian soap star Prachi Desai was approached about trading sex for a role.
‘BIG’ IN BOLLYWOOD

She told Bollywood Bubble: “I think very direct propositions were made to get cast in a certain film, a big film, but I have outright said no.”
TV star Ankita Lokhande was ordered to “sleep with the producer” when she offered a role. And it isn’t just women, the Sun reports.
Actor Ayushmaan Khurana said one casting director told him: “I’ll give you the lead role if you show me your tool”.

Nandita Dutta was charged by cops after allegedly luring two young women into pornography by falsely promising them a big break into Bollywood. The two young women were forced to get naked and be filmed.
Cops are also investigating a similar case involving Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundara. He is accused of making and distributing illegal XXX-rated films.

There’s another crisis in Bollywood: The mental health of the country’s biggest stars.
In 2020 alone, 12 A-list actors have reportedly killed themselves.
The COVID-19 pandemic played a role and actor Madhavan told Gulf News that the industry has downplaying the negative impact triggered by the virus.
“We are not letting out as much as we have been impacted because there are a lot of people who are ending their lives because of this and it makes me sad to say it but it’s a serious concern how people with daily wages are able to manage,” said Madhavan said.
But Bollywood has lost tens of millions of dollars since the pandemic kicked off and many actors have lost work.
“Even for somebody like me who has been blessed with the best in life, it was not easy to have liquidity for six to seven months to run our life,” Madhavan said.
“Your payments just stop one day and it was extremely abrupt. ”
