Kareena Kapoor Khan has landed in trouble for a pregnancy book she has co-authored with some people because the title, Pregnancy Bible, has offended some Christian groups who have filed a complaint against her. Kareena was also accused of hurting religious sentiments when there were reports of her charging INR 12 crore to play Sita.
But, she is not the first, the last, or the only A-list celebrity to have experienced this. If you type the name of a celebrity on Google and add the phrase “hurt religious sentiments,” you will find more results than you can read. So, here are some of those big Bollywood celebrities who have also been accused of hurting religious sentiment in our country.
1. Deepika Padukone
Every Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Sanjay Leela Bhansali collaboration has garnered ire from different groups for hurting sentiments. First, it was Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, which was criticised for not portraying the religious festival of Ram Leela correctly. Then, Bajirao Mastani was accused of not portraying Maratha leaders and Kashibai accurately, although that wasn’t a religious issue. But, the most infamous of the lot was Padmaavat. The hardwing Hindu Rajput sect Karni Sena’s tiff with Deepika was widely publicised, and there were people who even threatened to behead her.
2. Anushka Sharma
Anushka Sharma-backed production Patal Lok was not accused of ‘hurting sentiments’ by not one but two religious groups. First it was accused of showing Sikhs in poor light because it showed a Sikh man raping a woman. Then, it also got flak from Hindu groups for “glorifying beef eating.”

Shame on @AnushkaSharma @AmazonPrime for showing Sikhs as Rapists
I request @PrakashJavdekar Ji to take strong action against #patalokThis series must be banned and Amazon must be fined for their repetitive attempt to malign religious harmony in India @ANI @TimesNow @republic pic.twitter.com/PbJREdUbBw

3. Raveena Tandon
Raveena, Bharti Singh and Farah Khan were accused of hurting religious sentiments by the Samson Brigade Christian Youths and Christian Front of Ajnala Block, among others. The concerned clip is from Farah Khan’s show Back Benchers, in which Farah is seen playing a teacher who asks Raveena and Bharti Singh to spell the word ‘hallelujah’, following which the three make fun of the word.
In response to the complaint, Raveena tweeted that they did not intend to hurt anyone: “Please do watch this link. I haven't said a word that can be interpreted as an insult to any religion. The three of us never intended to offend anyone, but in case we did, my most sincere apologies to those who were hurt.”

However, Farah and Raveena both apologised later and, along with Bharti Singh, met with the Indian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, to make amends.
4. Akshay Kumar
First, Akshay’s film Laxmii was accused of hurting religious sentiments due to the initial title of the film “Laxmmi Bomb” mentioning the name of a Hindu goddess along with the word “bomb.” Then, he was accused of promoting love jihad in the movie. Social media was rife with comments about how Akshay is usually in the good books of those who slammed him for hurting religious sentiments. The more serious accusation was of misrepresenting the third gender in a stereotypical, disrespectful portrayal.
Hindu Sena has given a complaint letter @PrakashJavdekar to take appropriate action against the promoters, cast and crew of the upcoming movie "Laxmmi Bomb" starring @akshaykumar and directed by Sh Raghava Lawrence for making mockery of Hindu Goddess Laxmi's name, @ANI pic.twitter.com/5UjVfXBNJB

5. Saif Ali Khan
Saif’s OTT projects Tandav and Sacred Games 2 landed in hot water, but he was not mentioned in any tweets because he is not on social media. Even in the police complaints, it was the makers Anurag Kashyap and Ali Abbas Zafar who were mentioned. However, since stars are more popular faces, social media users called the actors out. Tandav made a lot of headlines this year for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, while Sacred Games 2 got heat from Hindu and Sikh groups both.
I wonder why Bollywood continues to disrespect our religious symbols! Anurag Kashyap deliberatly puts this scene in #SacredGamesS2 where Saif Ali Khan throws his Kada in sea! A KADA is not an ordinary ornament. It’s the pride of Sikhs & a blessing of Guru Sahib @NetflixIndia @ANI pic.twitter.com/c2KMbJVrwA

I condemn the way Zeeshan Ayyub, Saif Ali Khan, Ali Abbas Zafar reacted to our religious sentiments. MP govt will register case, thinking of banning it. That’s not all. Saif was also accused of hurting religious sentiments when he spoke about playing Ravan in Adipurush, a film which hasn’t been released yet, thus: “It’s interesting to play a demon king, less strictures in that. But we will make him humane, up the entertainment quotient, justify his abduction of Sita and the war with Ram as revenge for what was done to his sister Surpanakha by Lakshman, who cut off her nose.” The case was filed in Uttar Pradesh and accused Saif of negatively portraying “faith in Sanatan Dharma.”
6. Abhishek Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao
Ludo maker Anurag Basu caught a lot of heat for a scene in the film which showed Hindu god Lord Rama cutting off Surpanakha’s nose. In the movie, the character playing Rama accidentally cuts off the nose of the guy playing Surpanakha for real, leading to a fight between the men playing Surpanakha and Rama. In another scene, actors dressed as Goddess Kali and Lord Shiva are seen pushing Abhishek Bachchan’s vehicle. This was considered disrespectful by the groups complaining, so there were a lot of tweets with Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao and Anurag Basu tagged in them.
With due respect, @juniorbachchan and @basuanurag Look this denigration of our Hindu Gods cannot be tolerated any more.@MIB_India @PrakashJavdekar ji, please take action.
We demand the culprits be booked at any cost.

7. Aamir Khan
Aamir was accused of denigrating Hindu gods in PK by a Hindu group which submitted a complaint in Karnataka. Contrary to their position, though, senior BJP leader LK Advani praised the film, saying, “Hearty greetings to Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra for a wonderful and courageous film that they have produced in the shape of 'PK'. We are fortunate to have been born in a vast and variegated country like India. This however casts on all patriots a duty to ensure that nothing weakens the unity of the country—neither caste nor community nor language nor region, and certainly not religion.”
8. Shah Rukh Khan
Even King Khan wasn’t spared by religious groups. After the trailer of Zero released, he was accused of hurting the sentiments of Sikh groups because Shah Rukh was wearing a kirpan tied to his body. Since the kirpan is sacred to Sikhs and only meant to be worn or carried by those who are Sikh, they objected to the scene. While the producers said Shah Rukh is holding a sword, not a kirpan, the scene was actually altered later. A Red Chillies Entertainment representative stated: "Despite the fact that the film and its poster depicted only an ornamental dagger and not a 'Kirpan', steps have been taken by the respondent to alter the relevant scenes. The portions in question have been altered through visual effects to depict an ornamental sword."
